Michael Jackson's physician fires publicist for leaking jury selection information

On the first day of his trial, Michael Jackson’s personal physician fired his publicist for leaking jury selection information to a celebrity gossip website.

On Wednesday, TMZ.com had posted what purported to be proposed defense questions for potential jurors, a leak that Dr. Conrad Murray’s attorney acknowledged came from their own publicist. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor said the questions were “bogus” but that he was concerned about how information on the Internet would affect the answers potential jurors give during jury selection.

Murray is accused of involuntary manslaughter for giving Jackson a fatal dose of the surgical anesthetic propofol.

Defense attorneys told Pastor in chambers that a media company hired by the defense had leaked six questions the company had suggested for the jury pool. None of the questions ended up in the final questionnaire, which Pastor earlier ordered sealed.

“It is an embarrassment,” Ed Chernoff, Murray’s attorney, told the judge. Chernoff apologized and said the company would be fired.

After the hearing, Chernoff confirmed that the employee was Miranda Sevcik, a Houston publicist who began working for Murray and his legal team two days after Jackson’s death.

Sevcik declined to comment, beyond wishing the defense well.

On Thursday, 159 potential jurors were sworn in and screened for financial hardship. Jury selection is expected to continue Friday. Testimony in the case is scheduled to begin in May.

Mercoledì TMZ.com aveva postato quelli che dovevano essere i quesiti della difesa per i potenziali giurati, una fuga di notizie che l'avvocato del dottor Conrad Murray ha ammesso venire dalla loro stessa addetta stampa. Il giudice della Corte Suprema della Contea di Los Angeles Michael Pastor ha detto che le domande erano "false", ma che lui era preoccupato per come l'informazione su Internet poteva influenzare le risposte che i potenziali giurati avrebbero dato durante la selezione della giuria.
Murray è accusato di omicidio colposo per aver dato a Jackson una dose fatale dell'anestetico chirurgico propofol.
Gli avvocati della difesa hanno detto a Pastor in aula che un'azienda di media ingaggiata dalla difesa aveva fatto trapelare sei domande che l'azienda aveva proposto per il pool di giurati. Nessuna delle domande è finita nel questionario finale, che in precedenza Pastor aveva ordinato di secretare.
"E' imbarazzante", ha detto Ed Chernoff, avvocato di Murray, al giudice. Chernoff si è scusato e ha detto che l'azienda sarebbe stata licenziata.
Dopo l'udienza, Chernoff ha confermato che il dipendente era Miranda Sevcik, un'addetta stampa di Houston che ha iniziato a lavorare per Murray e il suo team legale due giorni dopo la morte di Jackson.
Sevcik ha rifiutato di commentare, pur augurando ogni bene alla difesa.
Giovedì 159 potenziali giurati hanno prestato giuramento e sono stati sottoposti a screening per difficoltà finanziarie. La selezione della giuria continuerà venerdì (oggi, ndt).
