Jackson museum plans falter a year after unveiling

, Ind. (AP) — An ambitious plan to build a museum, theater and casino campus to honor pop icon Michael Jackson in his hometown has stalled a year after it was unveiled, and some city officials say they think it's all but dead.

The city partnered with the Jackson Family Foundation in June 2010, a year after the King of Pop's death, in the hopes of building a $300 million megaplex dedicated to Jackson and his family in the city they left in 1969 when the singer was 11.

But months have gone by with little action, and questions remain about whether the foundation has the tax-exempt status required for it to receive 300 acres of city land at Interstate 94 and Broadway.

The Times in Munster reports the foundation merged with an existing nonprofit in December. Officers of that group had faced fraud accusations, and city officials said the foundation would instead work solo.

But Internal Revenue Service records do not list any tax-exempt Jackson-named group in Indiana, and the city has not responded to The Times' request for proof of the group's status despite extensions granted to the group.

Gary Economic Development Director Joel Rodriguez said the project, which Mayor Rudy Clay has said would create thousands of jobs and, when finished, generate $100 million to $150 million in income for the community each year, is "still in preliminary stages." But Councilwoman Marilyn Krusas said nothing has happened and that it appears all but dead.

Frank Podesta, whose San Jose, Calif.-based Aucopia Global LLC was contracted to conduct a feasibility study months ago, said his company is still in waiting mode.

"We're in a holding pattern to see if it's even going to happen," he said.

Krusas said she thinks some of the announcements of the project were premature given the state of the national economy, and she's convinced the project stalled after the Indiana General Assembly rejected a land-based casino in Gary.

"I think that the whole project was predicated on (a casino)," she said. "We all have great ideas, but if you don't have the money to do the development without any assistance, then all it is is an idea."

Councilwoman Carolyn Rogers said a Jackson venue "absolutely" should be a Steel City priority even if this project doesn't materialize.

"There needs to be something in the city of Gary," she said.
